The WellBeing. magazine and "The Finish Line That Keeps Moving" was created as a passion project to showcase my love of turning data into a well designed & communicated storyline.
I wanted to grow my personal skills in future trend analysis, graphic design, and storytelling through writing.
Research Question
“Where is health and wellness for females today in the saturated market, and where is it leading in the next 5 years?”
Research Methodology
1.
Define Objective & Research Question
Research Question can be viewed above.
I wanted to take a macro-perspective on the fitness, health, and wellness industry, as it is a side interest of mine. I knew I wanted to tell a story through a relatively short timeline so know my research question had to be timely and broad to begin - narrowing as my research inspired deeper questions.
2.
Secondary Industry Research
Next, using the syndicated consumer behavior databases below, I completed all secondary industry research:
1. Mintel - for broad currents industry reports
2. MRI-Simmons - build consumer persona to know who to target when writing paper copy
3. Statista - more granular statistics on themes found in Mintel
4. Additional blogs and industry papers in wellness
Lead me to create an insight and key takeaways to being writing.
3.
Key Insight & Conclusions
The key insight I found from my research was that in a complex, data-saturated market that health and wellness is, many women get caught constantly chasing the next solution to their cure. This cycle of searching and never feeling satisfied leaves women frustrated and paralyzed in decision making.
My research, on a more granular level, produced conclusions about trends & where the industry is moving. These can be read in the final product.
4.
Writing & Design Process
After spending lots of time researching, developing a consumer persona, and finding insights/conclusions, it was time to being writing and designing. To write, I focused on storytelling to the end consumer of the target market which required me to present research statistics in a digestible manner.
In the design process, inspiration images and a mood board creation was highly beneficial to create an editorial feel that still aligned with the emotions I aspired to share.

Key Takeaways & Lessons
Design requires many iterations to create the "feel" you hope to share. Taking momentary breaks from my work helped me to come back with a fresh pair of eyes and inspired meaningful edits.
Storytelling is so powerful if it continually is inspired by the main insight. I had my written insight to my left while writing to reference.
Lastly, I found designing so freeing and an additional aid to sharing the story I was intending to tell. Keeping consistent colors and type is the main way to do so.
